Paying more for coconuts in the Solomons

Pacific Business News (Honolulu)

A soap company based in the Solomon Islands has decided to pay a lot more than the going rate for coconut oil in order to keep its suppliers from going out of business.

Honiara-based Solomon Soaps Ltd. says it will pay a 30 percent premium for the more than 8,000 gallons of coconut oil it purchases monthly from Solomons coconut mills.

The company has itself struggled through political unrest in the Solomons, including ethnic conflict on Guadalcanal, but says it actually suffered more from the closure of a large plantation and wants to avoid more of that.
